Popular Scenic Drives Around Moosehead
As summer turns to fall, the transition in the Moosehead Lake region is extraordinary. Every year, autumn displays brilliant hues of red, yellow and orange.
The typical “leaf-peeping” season is from mid-September through mid-October. The change in the landscape from the greens of summer is breathtaking.
Greenville – Rockwood – Jackman – Bingham – Abbot Loop
This is a half-day trip (approximately 150 miles) that takes you past lakes, mountain views and a scenic river valley. There are several towns to stop in for souvenirs, a cup of coffee and a good lunch. Directions: From downtown Greenville take Rt. 6/15 North through Rockwood to Jackman. Turn left on Rt. 201 South toward Bingham. Turn left on Rt. 16 East to Abbot Village. Turn left on Rt. 6/15 North to head back to Greenville.
Greenville – Kokadjo
This trip is approximately 20 miles one way and will take you up the eastern shore of Moosehead Lake. Past the spectacular overlook at Blair Hill, several moose bogs, ponds and fabulous mountain views can be found. There is a trading post a Kokadjo where you can shop for souvenirs and food. Directions: From downtown Greenville take Lily Bay Rd. North approximately 20 miles to Kokadjo.
Greenville – Rockwood
This trip is about 20 miles one way and will take you up the western side of Moosehead Lake. You will pass Big Squaw (Moose) Mountain, the East and West Outlets to the Kennebec River and will treat you to magnificent views of Mount Kineo in Rockwood. Take a turn down into the village for a closer view at the Mt. Kineo Boat Launch. There are a few dining establishments and stores where you can grab a bite to eat. Directions: From downtown Greenville take Rt. 6/15 North to Rockwood.
Greenville – Monson – Elliotsville – Willimantic Loop
This loop is about 45 miles long. It will take you by spectacular views of Borestone and Barren Mountain. As well as over a couple of scenic bridges that span Wilson Stream. There are sprawling fields and old New England farmhouses. If you need refreshments, be sure to stop in at one of the shops in Monson. Directions: From downtown Greenville follow Rt. 6/15 South towards Monson. Just after the “Welcome to Monson” sign, turn left onto Elliotsville Road. After you cross the cement bridge crossing Wilson Stream, follow the fork to the right. At this point the route will turn to gravel. You will then cross Wilson Stream again on a bridge with iron grates. Turn right onto Rt. 150. Approximately 3-4 miles later you will turn right on North Guilford Rd. When this road ends turn right onto Rt. 6/15 in Monson. This road will lead you back to Greenville.
