History by the Lake: Postcards from Gus — Mapping and Photographing Maine’s Past
Join us for a presentation by Catherine Jewitt and John Meader on Postcards from Gus, a digital project celebrating the work of Maine cartographer and photographer Augustus “Gus” Phillips. Through postcards, maps, and photographs spanning the 1940s–1970s, discover how Gus captured Maine’s landscapes and communities — including the Moosehead Lake region, which held a special place in his heart.

You may not know the name Gus Phillips—but you probably know his maps. There may even be one hanging in your home, camp, or favorite local business.
Gus spent considerable time in the Moosehead region, photographing its villages, sporting camps, landmarks, people, and lake scenery. Tomorrow’s presentation will focus especially on the remarkable visual record he created here.
Gus’s granddaughter, Cathy Jewitt, and photographer John Meader will share Gus’s original maps and postcards alongside present-day photographs of the same places. Together, they will explore what has changed, what has disappeared, and what remains remarkably familiar.
Several enlarged Phillips maps will also be on display, offering a closer look at the detail and artistry that made his work so distinctive.
