The Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District (PCSWCD) is excited to offer our 8th annual Chainsaw Safety workshop! We will be working in collaboration with Sam Heffner  and Jack Houtz to present a comprehensive chainsaw safety offering. This workshop is being offered to women only and will provide a learning environment for women to learn about maintenance, operation and safe use of chainsaws. The workshop is 2 days, September 27th and 28th, and is held at the Williamsburg Forest in Williamsburg, ME.

PCSWCD’s Chainsaw Safety Workshop will provide participants with a well-rounded introduction on how they should safely handle, maintain and use a chainsaw. We will be hosting presenters Sam Heffner, Maine Forest Ranger, and Jack Houtz, Forest Technician, who will provide hands-on instruction, demonstrations and information about chainsaw usage. Sam Heffner has worked as a forest ranger with the Maine Forest Service for 16 years and has 12 years’ experience instructing Chainsaw Safety workshops to various organizations. Additionally, Sam was a professional logger for several years, and competed regionally and nationally in the Game of Logging. Jack Houtz graduated in 2018 from the UMaine forestry program. Following his time at UMaine, he worked for various contractors around the state of Maine. Jack is currently the forest technician for University Forests at the University of Maine. Jack and Sam take deep appreciation in the opportunity to showcase safe practices of learning how to use chainsaws.

Workshop topics will include an overview of chainsaw safety equipment and features, maintenance, sharpening, proper cuts, practical applications, step-by-step tree felling and more. The workshop is broken up into 2 days to provide participants with a comprehensive overview of handling, working with and fixing a chainsaw. Much of this workshop will be hands-on and participants will come away feeling comfortable handling and working with a chainsaw.
