From the “Most Endangered Historic Building in Maine” to the “Jewel on Moosehead Lake”: One of the last original railroad depots in Maine. Built in 1889 by the Canadian Pacific Railroad, this beautifully rehabilitated depot features an iconic “witches hat” roofline set against the dramatic backdrop of Moosehead Lake. The depot embodies a hybrid of Queen Anne, French, and Acadian styles which was characteristic of Canadian Pacific stations built in Maine, Quebec, and New Brunswick. Of the 18 stations built on the Maine portion of the railway, possibly 5 are known to still exist. The depot was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.
