Come “Ski & Ride the View!” Big Moose Mountain is located in the heart of the Moosehead Lake Region, with 27-33 groomed trails, two lifts, and a ski lodge for warming up and getting a delicious meal, all operated by the non-profit group The Friends of the Mountain. Big Moose Mountain is unequivocally the most affordable ski area for families. Every Sunday, you’ll find live music in the lodge through the end of March. Join the locals and experience one of the most beautiful views in the state!

Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing

Visitors will find numerous opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing while visiting the Moosehead Lake Region. The Moosehead Lake Region is a great place to strap on snowshoes for easy, moderate, and challenging winter hiking trails. If you are new to snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, there are Registered Maine Guides who can introduce you to this winter nature walk for an informative and interactive experience in the Maine woods. Trails are located at the following places:

The Natural Resource Education Center offers family-friendly snowshoe and cross-country ski trails behind the Moosehead Lake Visitor’s Center at 480 Moosehead Lake Rd., Greenville
Lily Bay State Park hosts family-friendly cross-country skiing and snowshoeing opportunities. There are groomed cross-country ski trails, maintained during the winter months, that overlook the lake and lead through woodlands and the campground loops, including the moderate 5-mile X-country Ski Loop Trail and several side trails.
Big Moose Mountain has 6 miles of groomed cross-country ski/snowshoe trails that are open to the public by donation. The trailhead is marked with a kiosk across from the parking lot. These clearly marked trails are home to natural wildlife, scenic views, and living history. These Trails are for use with the suggested donation of $10.00 per person per visit or a $100.00 annual donation. There is a locked money box at the kiosk, along with a map of the trails. The Appalachian Mountain Club boasts 90 miles of groomed, both tracked and untracked, backcountry skiing. Skate skiing is an option, and fat-tire biking is welcome. All trails are free. Visit the website
The Birches in Rockwood offers cross-country skiing trails of varied terrain for all levels of experience, and ski-in lodging is available. Snowshoeing and Cross-Country Skiing equipment available to rent. A seasonal trail pass is $75.00, and a daily trail pass is $15.00 for adults, $11.00 for children. Trail use is free for guests.
The Moosehead Outdoor Alliance has recently announced that all mountain bike trails in both zones 1 & 2 are open to snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Some of the Zone 1 trials may be groomed. Visit the website
Head over to the Law Farm Nature Trails for a peaceful, snowy walk in the woods! Located on Lee Cemetery Road in Dover-Foxcroft this 1.2 mile trail is somewhat uneven and bog bridges along the trail can be slippery this time of the year. Dogs are welcome with their well-behaved owners who pick up after them. Watch for wild life! Snowshoe hares LOVE the Law Farm. Visit the website

For the more adventurous cross-country skiers, there are hundreds of miles of ungroomed logging roads waiting to be explored. Be sure to stop into the Destination Moosehead Lake Visitor Center as you enter town for maps and information
